Originally dubbed “Reds” after the color of their uniform and fierce competitive spirit, the Leones are one of the most distinguished and successful franchises of the old Cuban League. Hailing from the city of Havana, they are the only team to compete in every season of the league, with a tenure spanning from 1878 to 1961. Famous for their fierce rivalry with Almendares, the Leones employed the slogan “La lena roja tarda pero llega” (the red beating is slow but inevitable). Unfortunately, in 1961, Fidel Castro banned all professional sports, effectively dissolving both the club and league.
