The Kansas City Monarchs are regarded as royalty amongst baseball enthusiasts. Formed in 1920 by businessman J.L. Wilkinson, they became one of the most dominant teams in baseball history. The Monarchs held the National and American League throne for an unrivaled ten pennants and suffered only a single losing season. The club assumed the crown as world champions in the Negro Leagues’ inaugural World Series in 1924 and again in 1942. They are also credited with introducing night games to professional baseball following Wilkinson’s purchase of portable lighting. This allowed them to tour extensively and spread their fame throughout the country. The Monarchs produced more stars than any other club, including such greats as Jackie Robinson, Ernie Banks, Satchel Paige, Bullet Rogan, and Buck O’Neil.
