Baseball has a rich history on the island and is the official national sport of Cuba. Brought over by students returning from the US in 1864, the pastime soon became a way of life. By 1878, Cuban leagues began to take shape, and in 1926, the Cuban National Team took gold in the inaugural Central American and Caribbean Games. The 1961 proclamation by Fidel Castro outlawing professional sports in Cuba brought about a transformative period for baseball on the island. Despite this, the resilient spirit of the game endured, and an amateur Cuban National Team continues to represent the nation on the global stage, embodying the unwavering dedication and passion of Cuban baseball players.
