They played their games at historic Rickwood Field. They were the Negro American League championships in 1943, 1944 and 1948. Their last championship team featured 17 year-old rookie sensation Willie Mays. Other Barons of Major League caliber included Lorenzo “Piper” Davis, Lloyd “Pepper” Basset, Nat Rogers and Ulysses Hollimon. Future New York Giant Artie Wilson and Chicago White Sox star Sam Hairston also played for the Barons. The Black Barons played in the Negro National League in 1932-1925 and 1927-1930, the Negro Southern League in 1932 and the Negro American League from 1937-1938 and 1940-1960.
