The Monarchs were organized in 1920 by J.L. Wilkinson, the only white owner in the league. It was one of baseball’s greatest teams. They swept the 1942 World Series over the invincible Homestead Grays, who had six consecutive Negro National League pennants.  In 1924, the Monarchs defeated the Hilldale Giants from Darby, PA in a thrilling 10-game series to capture the first Colored World Series. This colorful team featured the great Wilber “Bullet” Rogan on the mound, supported by the keystone combo of Newt Allen as second and Walter “Dobie” Moore at short. Hefty hitters like Oscar “Heavy” Johnson, Hurley McNair and George “Never” Sweatt wore this jersey. The Monarchs played in the Negro National League from 1920-1930 and in the Negro American League from 1937-1960.
