In 1923, veteran player Danny McClellan reorganized the Quaker Giants into a Boston-based club under the moniker Philadelphia Giants and began barnstorming as an independent team. Often, a club would use various names or affiliations for successful marketing. By the 1930s, the team would appear as the Boston Giants, Royal Giants, or Philadelphia Giants. The club featured one of the greatest pitchers of all time, “Cannonball” Bill Jackman. The lanky, side-arm pitcher was accompanied by the equally talented Burlin White behind the plate. Fans flocked at a chance to witness the spectacle, and sold-out crowds were common. Journalists testified to their legend and sang praises of mesmerizing performances throughout the country. Jackson has even been credited with season records as high as 52-2. The Royal Giants would also host other talented players, including Gene Benson, Pud Flournoy, and Herbert “Chink” Holmes.
