This Southern based team concentrated their play in
Birmingham, Nashville, Little Rock, New Orleans, Mobile, Memphis and
Chattanooga. They played in Atlanta’s historic Ponce de Leon Park when the
white minor league Crackers were out of town. In 1938 they captured the second
half championship of the Negro American League. Their top players were Nat
Peeples, Roy Welmaker and James “Red” Moore. “Chico” Renfroe started here as a
batboy. The Black Crackers played in the Negro Southern League in 1932 and the
Negro American League in 1938.
