The first recorded baseball game in Mexico took place on
July 4, 1889 near Monterey. The semi-pro Mexican League was founded in 1925. It
became fully professional in 1940. Mexican industrialist Jorge Pasquel was the
prime mover behind the professionalization of the Mexican League. He acquired
controlling interest in the Veracruz Azules (Blues) in 1940 and moved it to
Mexico City. Pasquel lured Josh Gibson away from the Homestead Grays by paying
him $2,000.00 more than his Gray salary. In 1941 Gibson put on a batting
display unequaled in Mexican League annals. He hit 33 home runs, 124 RBI’s and
had a .374 average in the 94 game summer season. With Gibson leading the way,
the Veracruz team won the pennant and is considered to be the best team to have
played in the Mexican League. In addition to Gibson, Veracruz had Ray “Talua”
Dandridge, Willie Wells, Lazaro Salazar and Barney Brown.
