This independent team was one of several black teams that
incorporated over the years against the California Winter League teams. The
beam beat Walter Johnson’s Los Angeles Olives in 1908, which marked the first time
that a black team was recognized by their white counterparts as being a
respectable opponent. It finished
the 1908-09 season with a 9-8record and competed against many outstanding major
league players such as Fred Snodgrass, George Stovall and Chick Autry. Several outstanding
African-Americans played on this team, including Lem Hawkins, Ad Langford, Wes
Pryor and Sol White.
