Established in 1913 by the Israelite House of David, a Christian religious community founded in Benton Harbor, Michigan in the early 1900’s by Benjamin and Mary Purnell. The team was quite an attraction due to the players wearing long hair and beards which were required by their religion doctrine and was not the norm for baseball players during the era. During the 1930s the team often traveled with the Kansas City Monarchs, while on the road the team would undertake a coast-to-coast tour of Canada in forty days. Over the years MLB hall of fame players such as; Grover Cleveland Alexander and Satchel Paige played for the House of David Team, fashioning fake or real beards.
