Once the hub of Puerto Rican baseball, Santurce was the epicenter of baseball dominance in the Caribbean. In 1939, Pedrin Zorrilla founded the franchise, naming them the Cangrejeros or “Crabbers,” an homage to its citizens' gritty, working-class nature. With performances by outfielder Luis Olmo, the 1950-1951 season initiated a reign of dominance by winning the Puerto Rican and Caribbean Series Championships. In 1952, Santurce signed outfielder Roberto Clemente and won its second league title. The club strengthened its lineup by signing outfielder Willie Mays during the 1953 season. The trio of Olmo, Clemente, and Mays would earn the moniker “El Escuadron del Panico” (The Panic Squad) and are arguably the greatest outfield in baseball history. The franchise dominated the league and Caribbean Series by winning a third championship in each. Santurce has continued throughout the decades, and although reinvented, the franchise is alive today and continues its legacy of baseball glory.
