Originally, the team was composed of amateurs from the
sandlots of the city’s Hill district. Later, they became one of the most
dominating teams in the mid 30’s. They won the 1935 Negro National League
championship with five future Hall of Famers: “Cool Papa” Bell, Oscar
Charleston, Josh Gibson, Judy Johnson and the legendary Satchel Paige. In 1937,
the team was dismantled by the raids of Dominican Republic dictator General
Rafael Trujillo. The Crawfords played in the East-West League in 1932 and in
the Negro National League from 1933-1938.
