The West Coast, known for its sunny weather, became a popular destination for winter baseball during the early 1900’s. Playing out of Los Angeles, the Giants were an independent club featured in the popular California Winter League, which comprised of both white and negro league ball clubs. The Giants famously defeated pitching legend Walter Johnson and his Los Angeles Olives during the 1908-1909 season. The victory gave credibility to black ball clubs by their white counterparts for the first time in baseball history. Notable players for the Giants include Wes Pryor, Ad Langford, Lem Hawkins, and Sol White.
