Owned by Dr. W.S. Martin, this solid franchise sent four
players into the big leagues: pitchers Dan Bankhead (Dodgers), Jehosie Heard
(Orioles), Marshall Bridges (Cardinals) and the first baseman Bob Boyd (White
Sox and Orioles). Other Major League prospects were Verdell Mathis, Marlin
Carter, Joe Scott, Frank Pearson and country western singer Charile Pride. The
Red Sox played in the Negro National League from 1923-1925 and 1927-1930, the
Negro Southern League in 1932 and the Negro American League from 1937-1955.
